The hottest month of summer is just a day away! With summer in full effect, it is now easier than ever to achieve the perfect summer tan with bronzer. Use this guide to find out how to choose the perfect color, texture and type of bronzer for you and learn how to use it to achieve a natural and beautiful August glow.
Achieving a beautifully bronzed face starts with well moisturized skin. Putting bronzer on dry or un-balanced skin can give you a patchy or uneven result so make sure you begin your makeup routine with a moisturizer and allow a few minutes for it to properly absorb before applying your base.
CHOOSING A BRONZER:
Texture: Sporting a super sparkly tan can be fun idea for a night on the town but in the daylight a face full of glitter just isn’t going to look natural. For a beautifully bronzed daytime look be sure you use a bronzer with a matte finish and for a little extra glow, try a bronzer with a subtle, satin shimmer.
Our favorite matte bronzers include Too Faced Soleil Matte Bronzer or Marc Jacobs Beauty O!MEGA Bronze Perfect Tan. For a stunning satin finish, try Hourglass Ambient Bronzer or Givenchy Poudre Bonne Mine Healthy Glow Powder.
To turn up the heat for a sultry night out, you can definitely use bronzer to add a little sparkle to your look. Try one of these brilliantly brazen bronzers for some added drama- Smashbox Fusion Soft Lights or Too Faced Snow Bunny Luminous Bronzer.
Formula: Most people tend to gravitate towards powder bronzers because there are so many of them from which to choose. And power bronzers are great if you are using a powder base or need a little extra oil absorption from your bronzer. But if not, then don’t be afraid to try using a cream bronzer instead. The benefit of using a cream bronzer is that it can feel more light weight and really blend seamlessly with the skin, which gives even more of a natural effect. Also, by nature, cream bronzers tend not to have much sparkle to them but they do give a subtle sheen which intensifies the bronzing effect. Want to try a cream bronzer and don’t know where to start? Try CHANEL’s Soleil de tan de Chanel. It melts into the skin and blends like a dream. Plus, it has a gorgeous velvety finish.
Shade: Finding the right shade of bronzer is absolutely key for achieving a fabulous and flattering result. It can be tempting to reach for a color that is much darker than your natural complexion, believing it will help give you a deep looking tan. However, unless you are sporting a spray tan on the rest of your body, your face should not be a noticeably different color, so, use a bronzer that is no more than a maximum of two shades deeper than your natural skin color. Remember, the point of bronzing your face is not to alter your complexion but to give your face a radiant and sun-kissed glow. To find the right shade of bronzer for your skin type, try Makeup Forever’s Pro Bronze Fusion line, a collection of six complexion-specific bronzers to ensure you find the perfect shade.
Undertone: The shade of bronzer you use is important for achieving a natural look, but to ensure the best possible result remember it’s also important to pay attention to the undertone. Ideally your bronzer should have an undertone that mirrors that of your natural skin tone. If you have yellow undertones, which traditionally means you have warm-toned skin, stick with gold-based or golden-toned bronzers. If you have pink or red undertones and are cool-toned, you will look most flattering in a bronzer with pink undertones. Those with neutral undertones should experiment with different bronzers or select one that is most complimentary to your hair color.
Best bronzers for yellow undertones- Clinique’s True Bronze Pressed Powder Bronzer or NARS’ legendary Laguna Bronzer. For Pink undertones, try one of Bobbi Brown’s Bronzing Powders, featuring five shades created to have a balance of brown and red tones, to mimic a natural tan.
Brush: Using the correct brush will make all of the difference in ensuring a flawless finish. Use a loose powder brush or kabuki brush with a larger application area that will apply your bronzer evenly, without streaking. If you are using a cream bronzer try using a stippling brush which will really help blend the product into the skin for an airbrush finish. Try these: Sephora Collection Pro Bronzer Brush #48 or Makeup Forever 124 Powder Kabuki Brush. For cream bronzers, use MAC’s #187Duo Fibre Face Brush.
Technique: Dust the bronzer over the high points of your face, including the forehead, temples and nose. These are the areas where the sun would naturally hit and give your face color so that’s where you want to focus. As a trick, think of it like creating a number 3 down the diameter of your face. Also remember to blend, blend, blend! Wearing a fully bronzed face is different than using bronzer to contour your features so while you want to focus on the high points of your face you want to blend the bronzer out in order to properly distribute the color.
Trick: Don’t forget to do a light dusting of bronzer over your neck and décolleté as well.
