I am fortunate to be the incoming Co-President for The Princess Project San Francisco, a non-profit organization that provides prom dresses and accessories to high school girls who may otherwise not be able to afford them. The Princess Project exists because its founders and all us who are a part of the organization believe that every girl should be able to attend her prom and feel good about herself regardless of her financial circumstances. It is a cause and an organization that is truly near and dear to my heart.
As we move into prom season and I have the opportunity meet with the girls and help them choose their dresses and accessories, I am reminded of how every girl has their own unique brand of beauty and the prom (or any other formal occasion) is the perfect time to show the world just what that means. So in the spirit of The Princess Project and on the horizon of prom season, here are some prom-inspired makeup looks that will truly help express a woman’s individual beauty, while prepping for the prom or for any other formal occasion.
There may be only one Kate Middleton, but for many of us a formal event is a welcome excuse to dress up and play princess for an evening. Christian Louboutin may not make a glass slipper (yet), but that doesn’t mean you can’t feel like a sexy Cindarella for a formal night out. Here are ways to play up your inner princess for a formal event:
Pastels makeup is playful, pretty and the perfect way to achieve a princess worthy beauty moment for a special event. Pair a pale pink or neutral lip with an iced-out pastel eyeshadow for some seriously sovereign beauty swag.
Rosy, highlighted cheeks
Rocking a rosy cheek is mandatory when embracing your princess moment and to take it to the next level, try lightly dust a shimmering highlighter over the top of your cheek bones to give a little glimmer and glow to your look.
Nothing says royalty like rocking long and luscious eyelashes to complete your overall princess aesthetic. To ensure your lashes look perfectly pristine for a formal event, try trimming the faux lashes so they only slightly longer than your natural eyelashes; this adds fullness and some length without looking too over the top.
If being on the cutting edge of beauty makes you feel most in your element, you simply couldn’t ask for a better time to prepare for a formal event. Edgy, grunge-infused makeup looks are all the rage right now and what would formerly be classified as avant garde or alternative beauty is now widely embraced by the mainstream. Here are a few ways to take on this trend for a formal event:
If you want to make a colorful makeup statement while playing up your eyes, try wearing neon eyeshadow or eyeliner for a bold and beautiful way for your peepers to pop. To make this look coquettish and not cartoonish, try lining only the waterline of your lower lashes for a subtle dash of color or go all out and do a full wash of bright and beautiful color on your lid while using darker or neutral color in your crease.
Yes, black lipstick. You’d be amazed at how flat out fabulous and flattering black lipstick can look and it is major way to make a statement with your makeup. To make this look work for a formal event, make sure to properly line your lips so that the look is defined and sharp and to minimize the chances of the color bleeding outside of your lip line.
If Elizabeth Taylor and Marilyn Monroe are your style icons and you wouldn’t dream of attending a formal event sans a string of pearls or a pair of diamond studs, you are epitome of a classic glam goddess and a formal event is the perfect time for you to shine!
Red lipstick is essentially the little black dress of lipsticks and every woman should own at least one, as this look will never go out of style. Red lips are always appropriate for a formal event because they are classic, feminine and fierce at the same time. For a formal night out, add a swipe of red or clear gloss over the top of your lips to give them some shine and to bring an extra element of glamour to your look.
The classic cat eye look is just that- classic. Like red lipstick, the cateye is a truly timeless beauty move that adds some major allure to your makeup. A cat eye can be paired with nearly any lip color but for the ultimate dramatic affect, pair it with a red lip (as discussed above) and embrace a truly classic Marilyn Monroe moment.
This year The Princess Project San Francisco distributed over 1,500 dresses to By Area High School girls so they could attend their prom. To find out more about The Princess Project San Francisco and how you can get involved, visit our website at http://www.princessprojectsf.org/
