Her dossier includes an impressive mix of behind-the-scenes artistry for Google and Pixar Studio productions, along with notable celebrity clients such as Jhene Aiko and Nicole Ari Parker. We recently sat down with Meko for insight on her most cherished beauty products, favorite celebrity trends and makeup must haves of the moment.
What is the biggest difference in how you approach doing makeup on celebrity clients vs. non-celebrity clients? Do you approach the aesthetic differently?
Honestly, there’s not too much difference in the way that I approach working on celebrity vs. non-celebrity clients. My approach is to always listen carefully to the clients’ individual requests and I always try to give all of my clients VIP service. For me that includes using the best quality products so that their makeup looks flawless and is long-lasting.
What are some of your favorite ‘go to’ beauty products that always you find yourself reaching for with your clients? For yourself?
A few of my favorite beauty products that I use regularly and can’t do without are Stila’s Double Ended Beauty Blender; it’s a sponge that I like to use for applying foundation because it gives such a beautiful and natural finish. I also love M.A.C. Cosmetics’ Fix Plus Spray to refresh the skin and set makeup. Lastly, I absolutely swear by Anastasia Beverly Hills’ Dipbrow Pomade for defining eyebrows- it literally lasts all day!
What is your favorite makeup trend of the moment and why do you love it?
My favorite makeup trend (which I doubt will ever disappear because it’s so fabulous) is using a highlighter or bronzer on the face after applying your base. This technique changes the look from a matte finish to fresh and dewy instantaneously. Singer/Actress Jennifer Lopez has fully embraced this trend and ever since, many others have as well. It really gives a natural and beautiful glow to the face.
What five beauty products that every woman should have in her purse at all times?
Five beauty products that I always keep in my purse are:
– Powder Foundation for touch-ups
– A lip Balm or lip Gloss
– Tweezers (incase you’ve forgotten to pluck and groom your eyebrows) and of course,
– Lotion to keep the skin properly moisturized
Are there any makeup items that you think are under-rated that deserve more attention?
I think the brow spoolie brush is quite under-rated. It looks a lot like a mascara wand for the eyebrows and helps to groom and keep the brows in place. You can never go wrong by perfecting your brows and giving them a quick brush! Also, a good face moisturizer truly sets the tone for fresh, beautiful makeup. I particularly like to use serums or elixirs like Makeup Forever’s HD High Definition Elixir (instead of a traditional cream moisturizer) to add just the right amount of moisturize to the face. I think serums are a little under rated and should be used a bit more.
What has your most interesting project been to date?
Since I really love doing makeup for film, I’d have to say my most interesting project was working on a movie set with actors Lou Diamond Phillips, Dash Mihok, Betsy Brandt and also Keith Stanfield, who is best known for his role in the movie Selma. There were a lot of great personalities there!
Who are your favorite celebs to work with and why?
My favorite celebrities that I’ve worked with are Nicole Ari Parker and Michael Madsen. They are both very genuine, approachable and truly passionate about their work.
Who are some celebs that you think rock a great makeup look on a regular basis and what makes their look so on point?
That’s a great question! I’d have to say that I regularly admire the makeup looks that Ciara rocks. Her skin always looks amazing and she seems to really embrace her natural beauty. I’m sure a lot of that can be credited to healthy eating and lifestyle, but also to the wonderfully talented makeup artists that she works with.
Is there anyone that you’re dying to work with? If so, why?
Maybe Janelle Monae or Rihanna. They’re both bold, beautiful and iconic and I love beautiful and bold personalities!!
