If you’ve ever had the pleasure of having a full-body spa treatment, chances are you couldn’t get enough of the sumptuous feeling of baby-soft skin.
We discovered OSEA after a spa treatment at Rosewood Cordevalle, a luxury haven nestled in Silicon Valley. As soon as the treatment was finished, we just had to keep that amazing feeling going. Lo and behold, we found OSEA, a SoCal-based bath and body brand that, to our delight, happens to be vegan. The products were so pure and luxurious that we were inspired to reach out to the brand’s founder, Jenefer Palmer, following a Malibu getaway.
Palmer’s family business dates back to the 1920s, as her grandmother, one of the first female chiropractors in the country, had a lifelong love of the sea. In the 1980s, Palmer began formulating all-natural products in her kitchen after being distraught with the harmful chemicals she found in other products. And the rest is history – the line has evolved through the years from mud masks to a full skincare and body care line, simple, wholesome products as pure as the ocean itself.
Tell us about your background, and what inspired you to start OSEA.
I started mixing natural ingredients to create skincare formulations in my kitchen in Malibu in the early 80s. It started in my kitchen out of necessity, but it’s kind of perfect that that is where OSEA began because I was a young mother at the time.
Then how did you go from your kitchen sink to a fully developed line of products?
When I brought my products to labs to have them tested and I told people what I was trying to do, they laughed at me. I was a total newbie and no one believed that I would be able to actually make products free of the toxic additives and preservatives that were so popular in the 80s. And, even more to the point, people didn’t understand why I would want to do that.
Nowadays, it’s become much more common knowledge that what we put on our skin is just as relevant to our overall health as what we put in our bodies.
As a great granddaughter of one of the first female chiropractors, the power of women obviously runs in your family. Did you always feel that you would own your own business?
I was raised to believe in the power of women to generate prosperity for their families and to be instigators of change. But, I never in a million years, dreamed I would one day own my own business.
If there was a category in my high school yearbook for “least likely to start a beauty company,” I would have won, by a landslide. A math and science nerd turned natural-foods-obsessed-hippy is not your typical beauty innovator profile. I have never been interested in makeup or even getting manicures. OSEA began as a personal mission to provide my clients with effective, non-toxic skincare during holistic treatments.
I have been fortunate enough to have built a brand that allows me to “geek out” about amazing skincare ingredients on a daily basis and connect with an audience of conscientious skincare shoppers who appreciate the science of natural ingredients as much as I do!
The fact that after 20 years OSEA continues to grow beyond any of my wildest dreams is one of the most gratifying feelings and allows me to learn about and connect with other female business owners.
What is your target market?
Women and men of all ages. Especially those who care about what they put in their body and realize that what they put on their body is just as important.
What was the key in getting OSEA to where it is today?
Integrity & persistence. Staying committed to the initial mission to create safe, non-toxic, natural skincare with the best ingredients. Doing and saying the same thing over and over for 20 years pays off.
Your products are so polished, sumptuous and amazing! Can you talk about some of the benefits of Gigartina, the main ingredient in your skincare?
Thank you! Gigartina Skottsbergii (Gee-gar-tee-na) Algae actively hydrates skin, protects against external aggressors, stimulates cell regeneration and boosts collagen production. Gigartina has been proven effective in helping to heal skin disorders such as psoriasis and eczema. OSEA’s USDA certified organic Gigartina Algae is hand-harvested from the pristine waters of Patagonia. These dynamic waters produce some of the world’s most mineral-rich, nutrient-dense algae which serves as the potent base of OSEA’s anti-aging and skin-soothing formulations.
What does it do for the skin?
It stimulates the collagen replenishment cycle, soothes skin and locks in moisture, boosts cell regeneration and helps heal psoriasis and eczema.
What is next for OSEA?
In 2016 we are beginning to expand internationally and our team is very excited to introduce OSEA to even more people. Personally, I’m most excited about the new products I’ve been formulating.
Outside of the Sea, what are your other sources of inspiration?
Travel. I love to travel.
